LANSING (AP) -- The Michigan House has voted to tap federal stimulus money set aside for next year to soften a cut in school funding now.

By a vote of 74-29, a majority of House members said Thursday the $184 million should be used to help schools avoid all but $10 of a $127 per student cut ordered by Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

Schools still would see their funding drop by the equivalent of $165 per student.

The bill looks unlikely to pass the Senate. A Senate Republican spokesman says the House instead should use $100 million saved by freezing a tax credit for low-income workers.

The House measure would restore half of the $52 million cut from wealthier school districts.

Cuts will either come now or later.

The school budgets will have to be cut again to reflect future falling revenues. Would it not be better to save the money for next year to offset the $2 billion in lost revenue that is going to come?

The schools should start by taking a look at what their core curriculum should be, and what else is just gravy.

This money is coming from the federal government. Why not support our schools and children with it instead of building a future bridge to nowhere.

If it wasn't for federal funds we wouldn't have the money to argue about. Give it to the schools. What do you want to save it for, a bridge to nowhere.

Hey yooper, you must not presently have any children or grand children in public schools or you would not have made your comment.

There's going to be nothing left but more deficit.
