IDLEWILD -- A Lake County community is getting hundreds of thousands of dollars to preserve some historic buildings.
Idlewild was once one of the most popular African-American resort destinations in the Midwest. Now $620,046 in grants will help preserve the area.
The money is made available through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) with funds from the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
More than $573,000 will help fix up the Henrietta Summers Senior Center. Another $46,450 will help community leaders prepare a feasibility study and development plan for the historic Flamingo Club. In the years before desegregation, the Flamingo Club was one of a handful of entertainment venues in America to feature African-American entertainers.
