KALAMAZOO (AP) -- With state revenues plummeting, administrators in many Michigan school districts are trying to find new ways to cut their expenses.
Michigan school districts could see their operating revenues drop 10 percent or more by fall 2010 because of the state's continued drop in tax revenues.
The Kalamazoo Gazette reports Sunday that many districts are forming focus groups this fall or seeking community input on how to balance their budgets.
Because most districts have been in a cost-cutting mode since 2002, easier budget cuts already have already occurred and the remaining options are all painful.
A common theme in districts' cost-cutting discussions is reducing payroll costs, which account for almost 90 percent of school operating expenses goes to personnel.
