Petoskey Becomes a “Trail Town” of the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT)

Memorandum of Understanding signed between the City of Petoskey and the North Country Trail Association.

Duane Lawton, President, Jordan Valley 45o Chapter, NCTA 231-547-5105PETOSKEY — Today the City of Petoskey entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the North Country Trail Association that establishes Petoskey as a “Trail Town” of the North Country Trail. The MOU had earlier been signed by Bruce Matthews, NCTA Executive Director.“The purpose of this MOU is to jointly promote the natural and cultural heritage of the North Country as a destination for visitors who ask for outdoor experiences and places to hike, through emphasis on the North Country National Scenic Trail in the vicinity of The City of Petoskey.”The North Country National Scenic Trail is a 4,600 mile long-distance hiking trail through the northern tier of states from New York to North Dakota. A unit of the National Park Service, it is Congressionally-chartered, similar to the Appalachian Trail.The NCT route through Petoskey includes the NCMC Natural Area, the Bear River Valley Recreation Area, and a section of the Little Traverse Wheelway.In addition to cooperative efforts between Petoskey and the NCTA to emphasize the proximity of the trail and local services available to trail users, signs will be posted at city entrances proclaiming Trail Town status for Petoskey. A number of local organizations and businesses are participating in programs associated with the NCT:

• Bearcub OutfittersThe Jordan Valley 45o (J45) Chapter of the NCTA (formerly Tittabawassee Chapter) is a local volunteer organization responsible for 80 miles of the NCT between Mancelona and Harbor Springs. Members of J45 adopt trail sections and participate in trail repair and trail building projects, group hikes and regular meetings and events. The club meets the second Thursday of odd months (except Jan.) at 7:00 pm in the Boyne Falls Fire Hall. northcountrytrail.org-------------------------------
The North Country Trail Association, headquartered in Lowell, Michigan, is a national non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the building and maintaining of the North Country National Scenic Trail, and telling its story. With members, chapters, partners and affiliates located along the 4600-mile length of the trail through America’s northern heartlands from New York to North Dakota, the NCTA is the primary advocate for the North Country Trail, and the red plaid nation that uses and celebrates it.
