Marie, Mich., has written and published a hockey coaching book that emphasizes the importance of fun in skill development. The book is titled “Ice Hockey Initiation: Coaching 3 to 6-Year Olds” and it is available in Kindle edition on Amazon.com or in print from the author himself.Parr is the head coach of the SooMichigan Hockey Association’s Hockey Initiation Program (HIP) and U-6 Mite Minor league. “When I first began coaching this age group, I couldn’t locate much information for the 6 and younger age group. My goal in writing this book is to pass on to you what I have learned,” Parr said.In his book, Parr provides information on coaching kids new not just to hockey, but to sports in general. He offers tips on partnering with parents (who may also be new to sports) and collaborating with coaching assistants. The book also includes drills, practice plans, ice-usage diagrams, and game configurations using cross-ice ideals.“Ice Hockey Initiation”de-emphasizes winning, while emphasizing playing and having fun. Parr believes this is the key to teaching, recruiting, and retaining young hockey players. “In order for the kids to gain skills, they need to be on the ice. With this age group, ice time equals development,” said Parr. “Hockey needs to be fun for this to happen. Kids have to want to come to the rink.”A lifelong resident of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Parr has played hockey since the age of four and has coached youth hockey for past 11 years. In 2011, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) named Parr its Michigan Hockey Hero, and in 2010, Parr received the Gordon W. Malcolm Sportsman of the Year– City of Sault Ste. Marie Volunteerism award for his work on developing the Kaine’sKlassicYouth Friendship Hockey Tournament held each February in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
