LANSING (AP) -- State lawmakers plan a Wednesday afternoon hearing on proposals that would set up penalties for violations and require reports related to stem cell research in Michigan.

The Senate Health Policy Committee plans to take testimony on the legislation but isn't scheduled to vote on the bills.

The legislation could be the first test of how much control state lawmakers might try to exert over embryonic stem cell research in Michigan.

Michigan voters in 2008 approved loosening the state's restrictions on the research. The measure says state and local governments can't prevent or restrict the research.
