Chef’s Knife This is by far the most popular knife used in home kitchen food preparation. It’s a multi task knife that is used to chop fruit and vegetables, slice through meats and cheeses, and can be used for a fine mince or dice.
Steak Knife
Most sets will include either 4 or 8 steak knives. These knives are meant to be included on the table while dining. Their sharp jagged edge makes cutting meats, such as steak, easier. Paring Knife
This knife has a sharp straight edge with a blunt tip and is smaller then most other knives. However, there are other versions who have a pointed tip or a beek shaped blade. This knife is a utility knife that is used for trimming, pealing and slicing fruits and vegetables. Some also use the paring knife to create basic food carvings and decorations. Serrated Blade This is a knife who’s blade is typically, but not always, longer then the other knives in the set. The blade is serrated, or has what appear to be sharp pointy teeth along the blade. This knife is used primarily for slicing bread, the serrations cut through the bread without crushing or tearing it. This knife also makes quick easy work out of cutting up melons and pineapples. Slicing or Carving Knife
These knives have a rounded tip and a long straight blade. The knife is used to slice meat such as a carving ham, roast or turkey. Because of its thin width and smooth surface it slides through the meat easily with little to no friction. Boning Knife
Equipped with a narrow blade, this knife is created to allow users to remove bones from meat and poultry. Fillet Knife Like the boning knife, this blade is built to make the removal of bones easier. However, this blade is a bit more flexible, allowing the user to remove the skin and small bones from fish and small birds. Cleaver
Used to cut large pieces of meat and poultry, the cleaver is a heavyweight blade. The purpose is to allow the user to cut through the meat with a single downward thrust. |
