Women over 40 years old are more likely to get breast cancer.  The best things to do to combat these risks are to get a mammogram and a clinical breast exam every year at age 40 or older.

The following know factors can increase a woman's chance of developing breast cancer:

  • Having breast cancer before
  • Pre-cancerous cells in breast lumps
  • Early first period and late menopause
  • Obesity after menopause
  • Recent use of oral birth control estrogens and progestins
  • Never having children
  • Having children after age 30
